The Fantastic Life

Stephen Meaux February 5, 2026

When I was young I drank Barq’s
And climbed out my bedroom window
Was rocking JNCOs at nine
Head banging to Korn and Rammstein
That’s the Family Values Tour

When I was young I played ball outside
Mediocre skills
Acted in plays
Mediocre skills
Skated the neighborhood
Mediocre skills
Dyed my hair blond
Biblical

Bruh, when I was young
I was in Europe & Africa
 The Grand Canyon & Kaplan
I climbed castles
Rode camels
 Drove main street
And smoked Camels

Yo, when I was young I had friends
And everybody pulled their socks up
We played video games and made short films
We ate chicken strip dinners and had pay-per-view parties

Seriously, when I was young I didn’t pay attention
 And no worries were given

The other day I thought about how I am living
Alone with a cat
Learned a lesson
Made a bad investment
To do it all over again
Stuck in a city
No connection

The other day the snow fell
Had on 15 layers
Fixed another drink
Watched another show
Had that thought again
Where are my friends

The other day I called my mom
And asked a question
She told me don’t do it that way
You’ll damage your clothes

So then I went to work
And took a nap
And my phone rang
And I got miffed
But later I drank a Guinness
And paid the bills
Then saved the clothes
And went to bed

The other day was fantastic

 Tomorrow I’ll be in Chicago
 Or Montana
Probably Louisiana

I’ll be sixty-four
Still working, still unsure
Tell my one story
Cook that one dish

Tomorrow I’ll work outside
Wave to strangers
Sleep without noise
Hang clothes on the line
It’s the month of July
And I’m not hot

 And tomorrow
I’ll remember what he told me
 Mind your own
 Do your best
Take care of yourself
 Help the rest
 And
 Don’t worry
 Whatever happens, happens
 Tomorrow,
 I will be alright
